Job Description

Job Summary: 

Process all incoming animals following applicable procedures, policies and protocols. Provide high level of patient care and appropriate follow-up in conjunction with the veterinarians' direction for animals in the shelter requiring medical treatment. Patient care may also include blood draws, IV catheter placement, nursing care, radiology, anesthesia and surgical preparation. Provide assistance with surgical procedures. Work cohesively with co-workers, other departments and volunteers. Assist the public in a professional manner.

Evaluation Center Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean and feed all animals in the Evaluation Center and Dog Isolation kennels
  • Medicate all animals utilizing the medical report twice daily
  • Perform all owner-requested euthanasia and all stray euthanasia when necessary
  • Process each animal by examining and documenting in computer database all health information, vaccinations, any medical attention provided, veterinarians notes if medical care provided off site, presence of microchip and all animal description information
  • Notify Associate Director or Shelter Manager if an animal needs euthanasia
  • Notify Staff Veterinarian if an animal requires emergency medical care
  • Photograph all animals upon intake
  • Process animals according to established priority and protocol
  • Review all e-slips by examining and medicating if required, moving animal into appropriate isolation area, if required, and documenting appropriately
  • Start medical treatment and provide nursing care directed by the Veterinarian, Veterinary Services Supervisor and/or previously established protocols including but not limited to IV catheter, fluid therapy, bandages, ear cleanings, nail trims and medications
  • Perform vaccinations and microchipping and document appropriately
  • Re-evaluate behavior and medical reviews utilizing daily report
  • Perform monthly health checks and document all animals housed in the shelter long term
  • Prepare rabies specimens for health department testing
  • Collect specimens such as blood, urine, ear swabs and stool for testing
  • Perform laboratory testing such as urinalysis, ear cytology, fecal, heartworm tests, Parvo and FeLV/FIV Snap Tests
  • Clean, maintain and re-stock the Evaluation Center
  • Communicate with customers, volunteers and co-workers in a professional, courteous and calm manner at all times
  • Follow established policies and procedures

  • Perform weekly inventory as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Surgery Center Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Monitor patients while under anesthesia and during post-op recovery
  • Execute correct surgical prep technique and transferring animals to the surgical table
  • Clean and disinfect all surgical equipment, tables, ET tubes and tools
  • Wrap and autoclave surgical packs appropriately
  • Administer treatment to Surgery Center animals, provide requested patient medical care, feed and ensure proper diets are provided.
  • Provide IV catheter, radiology and nursing care as directed by veterinarian
  • Administer medications IV, IM, SQ, PO, IP as directed
  • Effectively and efficiently provide medical care in emergency situations as directed by the veterinarian
  • Assist and perform dental prophylaxis
  • Maintain medical/surgical treatment record and report in an accurate and timely manner and in accordance with HSPPR procedures, update records in the shelter database
  • Administer vaccines and microchips and document appropriately
  • Communicate with customers and other shelter staff concerning the health of animals in the Surgery Center. Answer general questions about HSPPR procedures and veterinary care of animals.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Surgery Center equipment to assure cleanliness and safety
  • Perform euthanasia as required
  • Clean and disinfect the Surgery Center kennel and health care areas to ensure they are maintained in a neat and organized manner
  • Work with and provide training as required for PIMA students and volunteers
  • Provide accurate information and friendly professional service to the public by handling the drop offs coming in for surgery in the mornings.
  • Assist the veterinarian with patient exams by providing proper animal restraint, obtaining a medical history from the client and filling medications
  • Assist during surgeries by providing animal restraint, assisting with pre-medication and intubation administration
  • Animal handling to also include kenneling animals on intake and retrieving animals for owners following appointments within the surgery center
  • Answer the telephone as needed, provide information to the public, and assist customers
  • Clean kennels and provide animal care as directed by the Veterinary Services Supervisor
  • Computer data entry and record keeping according to established protocol
  • Check and re-stock supplies within the Surgery Center as needed
  • Perform weekly inventory as assigned
  • Follow established policies and procedures

  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns and that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.

Material and Equipment Directly Used: 

Basic computer skills and the ability to handle money transactions required.

Skills / Requirements

Education/Experience Necessary:

High School diploma or general education degree (GED)

  • Prior animal handling and customer service experience required
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment desired
