Job Description


Responsible for planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions.  Preparing and publishing timely monthly internal financial statements.  Research technical accounting issues for compliance.  Ensures compliance with the internal controls over the company’s accounting and financial procedures.  Works collaboratively with the VP of Finance, Department Managers and Administration on the annual budget.  Committed to the goals, mission and management philosophy of HSPPR.

 Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting Management:

  • Monitors the financial position of HSPPR, ensuring sound fiscal controls and financial integrity of HSPPR’s resources.
  • Prepares monthly journal entries, bank reconciliations, and internal financial statements in a timely manner.
  • Reviews department financial statements with all departments throughout the year. 
  • Compares budget with variance analysis and recommends corrective action.
  • Provides support, analysis and reporting for all Departments.
  • Supports VP of Finance and Administration, CEO, Directors and Department Managers as needed on accounting matters.

Integrity of Accounting Practices:

  • Ensures that effective internal controls are in place and ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable non-profit audit principles.
  • Maintains and enforces a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates with external auditors and prepares documentation for the annual financial audit, tax return and 401k audit and ensures that they are completed in a timely manner.

Asset Management:

  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls and policies.
  • Maintains the organization bank balance.
  • Ensures all accounts receivable are collected in a timely manner.

Staff Management:

  • Directs and supervises the Accounting Department in the performance of their respective responsibilities.
  • Coaches staff by providing regular, ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations to assure staff can achieve goals.


  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals and success of HSPPR.
  • Appropriately documents observed animal behaviors utilizing objective language as required in relevant procedures and/or policies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned. 

Education/Experience Necessary

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.  Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.  Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Finance and Accounting, preferably in general accounting and financial analysis capacities for non-profit sector.  Possess strategic thinking and demonstrated ability to work in a complex, multi-location business model with diverse stakeholders.  Experience with accounting software, management information systems including Windows Network operating system, Microsoft products and SQL data base.
  • Desired:  non-profit experience, experience with Abila accounting software and crystal reporting.
