Job Summary:

On a routine basis, or as assigned, enforces state and local laws and ordinances to protect the safety and rights of the public and the welfare of animals.  Tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, responding to reports of vicious animals, animal cruelty, animal pick-up and confinement, responding to property damage complaints, issuing citations, inspection of containment facilities, preparing reports, and testifying in court.  The majority of the work is performed in the field driving a department vehicle and responding to reported violations or area of need.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Apprehension, control and confinement of loose, unlicensed, injured, abandoned or dangerous animals – both domestic and livestock.
• Investigation of reports o animal cruelty an vicious animals
• Enforcement of animal control ordinances, including issuing citations and warnings
• Pick up of dead animals
• Responds to citizen calls for service, complaints and requests from other agencies; explains laws, policies and procedures.
• Prepares written and oral reports.
• Operates Animal Control vehicle.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Skills / Requirements

Minimum Requirements and Abilities Necessary:

• Sincere interest in the mission, vision, values, and goals of The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and Animal Services Department;
• Must be a U.S. Citizen;
• At least 18 years of age;
• High school diploma or GED;
• Valid Colorado Driver’s License and insurable driving record;
• Have no convictions for felonies or crimes of moral turpitude;
• Eligibility for commission as an Agent for the Colorado Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Protection;
• Pass a drug test, basic physical fitness test, hearing and eye exam (specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception);
• Pass various qualifying exams and background investigations.

Physical Demands

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally and 30 pounds frequently
  • Requires walking and standing to a significant degree
  • Primarily works in the community in all types of weather conditions but also completes work in an office environment
  • May be exposed to respiratory, noise, physical, mechanical and/or electrical hazards
  • Exposure to Zoonosis diseases (a disease that can be transmitted to humans from animals) is possible
  • Exposure to communicable diseases is possible
  • Your demeanor and dress should reflect the professionalism is takes to do your job by being neat, clean, and wearing the appropriate attire for position. Please refer to "Standards of Appearance" for further clarification. 

Schedule Requirements

Incumbent may be part time, seasonal, or full time.  Generally staff filling this position will be scheduled to work a 10 hour; however, schedule may change as needed and on short notice.  Duties hours will vary and will generally between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm.  Schedule will include weekend and holiday work.
